Completing her 4th marathon just six days after her fifth round of chemotherapy set Mary’s sights on what more can be accomplished during difficult times. Her energy and principles help transform the lives of people in dark places, including wounded amputee veterans, people living with disabilities, and those facing tragedy, loss, cancer, and low morale in the workforce.
In 2000, Mary joined the board of US Wheelchair Sports, while working with Dick Traum at Achilles. Within 10 years, she went from volunteer to Vice President of Achilles International and helped develop a great presence globally through marathon tours for the disabled, particularly amputees back from Iraq and Afghanistan. Mary and her team of wounded veterans have been awarded the honor of being named one of Runner’s World Magazine’s RUNNING HEROES.
Through USWSF, Mary is working with an award-winning production team on a documentary of Dick Traum and her work with him, to encourage others to achieve. Along with her work at USWSF, Achilles International, and as a former FORD fashion model in NYC, Mary is a professional motivational and inspirational speaker. Her topics include challenge and success with perseverance using her personal focus on disabilities and women’s health. She was honored to be the kick-off speaker to the White House Staff for their Wellness Seminars. Mary found her passion by speaking from her heart knowing others could be encouraged. Many years were spent traveling the country speaking to thousands of people, young and old, at a time about being confident with whom you are and developing what skills you have, even amidst struggles. “Struggles” range from rejection, unwanted change, accountability, forgiveness, body image, or maybe even a will to live. Her work since 9/11 has been life-changing for many.
